Lake Helene

Looking across the still waters of Bear Lake to the landscape beyond, I admire the scattering of bright gold aspen on the mountain slope beyond. Today marks only the first day of fall, but if the forecast holds, the colorful leaves I see now will soon be on the ground. By tomorrow morning, wintry temperatures and feisty winds will have moved in. Such conditions are sure to strip branches bare. But not to worry, today the weather is gorgeous and I’m on my way to a lake I’ve never visited before.

Smoke Season
About ten days ago, a shift in the jet stream delivered a thick layer of smoke to the Front Range, cutting the visibility (which normally exceeds 35 miles) to less than 10 miles at times.
