Lake Helene

Looking across the still waters of Bear Lake to the landscape beyond, I admire the scattering of bright gold aspen on the mountain slope beyond. Today marks only the first day of fall, but if the forecast holds, the colorful leaves I see now will soon be on the ground. By tomorrow morning, wintry temperatures and feisty winds will have moved in. Such conditions are sure to strip branches bare. But not to worry, today the weather is gorgeous and I’m on my way to a lake I’ve never visited before.

I’ve heard that in the moments before a tsunami crashes ashore, the sea rushes away from the beach. I’ve also heard that what you don’t want to do at such a time is follow the sea as it rushes out, because it’s coming back with it a bloody big wave.
