Snow Day

Monday, January 14th, 2013 in Buckinghamshire
Snow Day

It snowed last night and most of today and although the total accumulation didn’t top two inches, it made everything look wonderfully white. It also screwed up traffic across the midlands. Fortunately, we didn’t have to drive anywhere and were therefore at liberty to enjoy the snow to its fullest, warmed by the knowledge that we had a well-stocked refrigerator.

The daylight hours are still sparse right now. It was a race to find time to get outside for our afternoon walk before the sun sank below the horizon. We made it, but as you can see from the dim lighting in these pictures, we didn’t have a moment to spare.

We didn’t go far, just around the neighborhood. The sidewalks were coated in a thin sheen of black ice and the trails were sloppy in places where pockets of slush had melted into deep puddles. The puddles were re-freezing in the cold evening air, forming a patchwork of miniature ice rinks.

I spent the rest of the evening making a list of things I have to do this week. One of those things is to start taking an online course about computer networks. Hopefully I can stick with it and learn something that is useful to my technical writing. The workload is estimated to be between four and twelve hours per week. Not sure I have much more than four hours per week to devote to it, so I’ll have to work efficiently.

Grand Canyon
So far on this vacation, I’ve done little more than sit in the car, play Wasabi Sudoku on my iPad and hobble from one gallery to the next along the length of Canyon Road.
Lower Yosemite Fall Trail
Lower Yosemite Fall Trail
There are so many things to do and so many sights to see in Yosemite, I found it a challenge to know where to start. We flipped through our guide books and studied our maps and decided that the Lower Yosemite Fall Trail seemed like a good opener.
Weekend in Cornwall
Weekend in Cornwall
We booked a short holiday at a cottage on Porthmear Farm in Pendeen, Cornwall. On the day of our departure, it took us ages to get organized and out the door. We couldn’t decide what to bring and in the end didn’t decide at all.
